“My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding” hilarious – and poignant
Reviewed by BERNIE BELLAN I had first heard of “My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding”on Jian Ghomeshi’s terrific arts & culture show on CBC, “Q”, so it was with great anticipation that I was looking forward to seeing the Winnipeg premiere of this particular show.
What’s happening with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights? By BERNIE BELLAN In November, 2011 the Canadian Museum for Human Rights held its first ever public meeting. At that time it was reported in this paper that the most substantial piece of news emanating from that meeting was that the opening of the museum had been pushed back to 2014. Reports since then now put that 2014 opening date into question. When Izzy Asper first announced plans for the museum in 2003, he pegged the capital costs at $200 million. Since then costs have continued to climb. In 2007 the cost for the project was given as $265 million. By 2009 the cost had risen to $310 million.

First Annual Shindleman Family Lecture at the Canadian Institute for the Study of Anti-Semitism Remarks by Hannah Rosenthal Special U.S. Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism  Delivered at the Hotel Fort Garry May 7, 2012 Good evening. Thank you for inviting me here today. It is an honor to be here as a representative of the United States Government and admirer of your work. The Canadian Institute for the Study of Anti-Semitism is one of only six institutions in the entire world dedicated to the scholarly study of anti-Semitism. This is an extremely important mandate. I have seen, throughout my travels as the United States Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat anti-Semitism, that anti-Semitism continues to spread hatred and intolerance in new and old forms. Only by working together to develop systematic and concrete ways of promoting acceptance and respect can we hope to overcome this evil.
7th annual Kanee Lecture Former Mossad director outspokenly candid By BERNIE BELLAN   EFRAIM HALEVY     In the program for this year’s Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada Sol and Florence Kanee Distinguished Lecture, Winnipeggers were told that this year’s guest lecturer, Efraim Halevy is known as a “hard-headed pragmatist on issues involving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, willing to ruffle feathers on the right and the left.”
"Bet Knesset Chadash" (The New Synagogue) By BERNIE BELLAN April 27 In a move that was not totally unexpected, it was announced today that a new congregation is to be established in Winnipeg as of this coming September. In a press release issued by Laurelle Harris Pinsker (who is the wife of Rabbi Lawrence Pinsker), the following description of the “new shul”, to be entitled “Bet Knesset Chadash” stated: “Beginning this September, there will be a new opportunity for Winnipeg Jews to build community together.
